Roanoke schools ask for $3.7 million more to save 81 jobs
School leaders ask council for a answer by next week.
Roanoke school officials told the city council this afternoon that they will need $3.7 in additional funding above and beyond the $62 million provided by the city’s funding formula.
And they’d like an answer by April 3.
City Superintendent Rita Bishop said that amount of money will save 31 teachers, three nurses, three guidance counselors, four intervention specialists and 40 teaching assistants. Bishop said it would also allow the school system to maintain summer school “up to where it should be.”
Curt Baker, deputy school superintendent for operations, said the schools started with a budget shortfall of $12.5 million but have reduced it on improved revenue projections, federal stimulus money and savings from school closures.
The council and school board are still discussing the request.
