Patrick Henry High School students resume classes after bomb threat

Patrick Henry High School students who were evacuated this morning after a bomb threat have returned to the school, a school spokeswoman said.

The students, who were bused to other schools while police searched the building, returned to the building about 12:30 p.m., said schools spokeswoman Tiffany Woods.  Many students had already been picked up by parents or left in their own vehicles, though.

No bomb or other hazard was found in the search, Woods said.

The threat was called in to the Roanoke police dispatch center at 7:55 this morning, according to Aisha Johnson, Roanoke Police Department spokesperson. At least one canine officer is searching the school with school officials, and Virginia State Police officers were assisting with the investigation.

Because of the sub-freezing temperature, PH sophomores and juniors were bused to James Madison Middle School rather than wait out the investigation standing in the parking lot. Seniors and freshmen were taken to Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Students at the Roanoke Valley Governor's School, which is on the PH campus, were sent to nearby Raleigh Court Elementary School gymnasium, according to Scott Watson, the school's director.

The city school's phone messaging system alerted parents to the threat. Mary Via, a parent of two PH sophomores, said she received an automated call this morning and drove to the school to pick up her children and their friends.
