Roanoke lawyer won’t run for attorney general’s nomination
John Fishwick’s decision opens clear pathway to nomination for state Del. Steve Shannon of Fairfax County.
Roanoke lawyer John Fishwick has decided not to run for state attorney general, ending an exploratory campaign effort he began in October.
Fishwick announced his decision this afternoon, saying, "I have concluded that for now my role should remain in the aggressive private practice of law, fighting against injustice and for people whose lives and livelihood depend on that representation."
Fishwick’s decision appears to give state Del. Steve Shannon of Fairfax County a clear path to the Democratic nomination. Three Republicans – former U.S. Attorney John Brownlee of Roanoke County, state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli of Fairfax County and David Foster of Arlington – also are running for attorney general.
Fishwick said he raised more than $160,000 in two-and-a-half months and was convinced he could have raised enough money for a statewide campaign.
“For me, the process of exploring a race for Attorney General has first considered what
contribution I can make to the people of Virginia through this office; and then, how does that potential contribution compare to the important work I believe I accomplish through my law practice where every day it is my privilege to fight for those who often have no way to help themselves,” Fishwick said in a statement announcing his decision.
