Two people were killed in a wreck that left a car on fire on Interstate 81 in Botetourt County, police said.
An adult and a minor were killed in the crash that happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on northbound I-81 between Buchanan and Natural Bridge, according to state police 1st Sgt. John Noel.
Police identified the vehicle's occupants as Dr. Jeffrey George, 49, and his daughter, Hannah George, 15. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Spokesman Eric Earnhart said late Wednesday that George was one of the hospital's cardiovascular surgeons.
The two were in a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban headed north when the SUV hit a left guardrail twice and then landed on its side in the median, Noel said. The vehicle was in flames when firefighters and police responded, Noel said.
Traffic was backed up on I-81 near the wreck until about 9 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
