Iron Gate abduction scare turns out to be misunderstanding

When two teenage girls in Botetourt County saw a man drive up to them Sunday in a small green car, their reaction -- amid two recent carjacking abductions -- was to run and report to authorities an attempt against them.

But the man, according to a statement from the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office today, was simply trying to deliver a "long-promised sack of onions" to the family of one of the girls.

At about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the two girls, who were not identified because they are minors, reported the incident near the intersection of U.S. 220 and 10th Street in Iron Gate, the sheriff's office said.

In recent weeks, two abduction-related incidents had been reported in Clifton Forge, which is less than three miles away. In Sunday's incident, the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office, the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office and the Iron Gate Police Department quickly responded.

When the suspect saw a sketch of himself on television on Tuesday night, he came forward to authorities, the statement from the Botetourt County sheriff said.

"Both the promise and the presence of the onions were confirmed," Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle said in the statement.
