Police charge Ohio man in fatal wreck
The Roanoke wreck claimed the life of a Rocky Mount police officer early Saturday morning.
An Ohio man has been charged with manslaughter in the fatal wreck last weekend that claimed the life of an off-duty Rocky Mount police officer.
Roanoke Police on Tuesday charged Brooks Ryan Leisure, 25, of Logan, Ohio, with involuntary manslaughter stemming from the the crash on U.S. 220 early Saturday that killed Jason Maxey, spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said in a statement.
Meanwhile, police asked drivers or others who may have witnessed the accident to come forward.
The two-vehicle wreck happened early Saturday morning in the southbound lanes of U.S. 220 between Elm Avenue and Franklin Road, and closed the three lanes in that direction for eight hours.
Maxey was traveling south in a southbound lane of the highway, which is divided, according to search warrants filed in Roanoke Circuit Court.
Wednesday, police said Leisure was driving a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo involved in the accident. Court records show police believe he was driving north in the southbound lanes prior to the wreck. After the accident, Leisure appeared to be intoxicated, according to the court records filed by police over the weekend.
Maxey, who was off duty and driving his personal vehicle, died at the scene. Leisure was taken to Carilion Memorial Hospital, and was arrested when he was released Tuesday night, Roanoke police said.
Leisure's father told The Roanoke Times Monday that his son had told him he was a passenger in the Isuzu.
Roanoke police have refused to release further details on the investigation. They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the wreck to call 853-2211.
