Fatal shooting in Roanoke pharmacy ruled justified

A Roanoke pharmacist was justified in using deadly force against a man who was attempting to rob him, Roanoke’s top prosecutor said this afternoon.

On July 1, police responded to Sanco Drug in the 1200 block of Riverland Road Southeast and found two men who had suffered gunshot wounds. One of the men was Sanco owner and chief pharmacist Bob Kennedy, who was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and released later that night. The other man, Corey Ramsey, 22, who had been living in Bath County, died at the scene. Autopsy results showed that Ramsey had levels of hydrocodone in his bloodstream two to three times higher than normal therapeutic levels.

Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney Donald Caldwell said in a news release that, under the circumstances of the case, he felt Kennedy was justified in using deadly force to defend himself.

Caldwell said he would not pursue criminal charges in the matter.
