SUV involved in fatal crash was driving wrong way down U.S. 220, search warrants show
The sport utility vehicle involved in a fatal wreck in Roanoke over the weekend was driving the wrong way down U.S. 220 at the time of the crash, according to search warrants filed in Roanoke Circuit Court. Police who responded to the wreck also said the occupant of that vehicle appeared to be intoxicated, the search warrants show.
The wreck killed Rocky Mount police officer Jason Maxey, 34, early Saturday morning. He was driving his personal vehicle and was not on duty.
An officer at the scene of the wreck wrote in a search warrant that Brooks R. Leisure, who survived the crash, smelled of alcohol. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Roanoke police filed a search warrant to obtain blood samples from Leisure.
Police said Leisure, 25 of Logan, Ohio, was the driver of one of the two vehicles, but his father said Monday that he was a passenger and that the driver fled after the wreck.
Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson would not say Monday if police are looking for another person who may have been involved in the wreck.
Search warrants show that police are searching the SUV, a 1996 maroon Isuzu Rodeo, for other evidence, including papers that would show vehicle ownership.
Police are still investigating and have released few details about the crash. No one has been charged.
