Police driving exercise ends in wreck, injures two people

A Roanoke County police recruit practicing a low-speed driving exercise today drove down an embankment and crashed the cruiser upside down in a creek, sending herself and an instructor to a hospital, police said.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Roanoke County Lt. Chuck Mason said in a press release.

The wreck happened about 11:30 a.m. at the Laurel Mountain Police Driving Center near Dixie Caverns, Mason said. The release did not say how deep the creek is and Mason could not immediately be reached.

The names of the recruit and the instructor have not been released because their families had not been notified.

The cause of the wreck is being investigated.
