Northbound I-81 again open in Pulaski Co.

Map

One lane of Interstate 81 in Pulaski County has reopened following a crash that backed up traffic for hours this morning.

A tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the road at northbound I-81 at mile marker 105 just before 9 a.m., Virginia State Police said. The truck struck the New River Bridge and ran up on the side of it, leaving the cab dangling off the bridge and the trailer steady on the bridge.

It took crews about an hour and a half to get the driver out of the cab, state police said. He was identified as Claude Armstead, 52, of Batesville, Miss. Armstead is listed in good condition at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.

Traffic was at a standstill for several hours, causing at least two minor crashes behind the tractor-trailer crash, police said.

The left lane has reopened, but the right lane remains closed in that area.
