Rocky Mount lifts mandatory water restrictions

The town of Rocky Mount announced this morning that it's lifting mandatory water restrictions due to recent rainfall.

The flow in Franklin County's Blackwater River, the town's water source, had dropped to an historic low -- about 1.5 cubic feet per second -- late last month when the restrictions were ordered, but the flow has improved significantly in recent days to near 20 cubic feet per second.

Rain from Tropical Storm Hanna is forecast in the region later today and tomorrow, too.

"With rain in the forecast, I feel confident that our water supply is in good shape," said Jonathan Coleman, the town's interim water plant superintendent, in a news release.

Town Manager James Ervin thanked town's water customers for helping to reduce demand in recent days.

The town's outdoor burning ban remains in effect.
