Authorities ID 12-year-old boy who drowned at Smith Mountain Lake
Authorities have released the name of a 12-year-old boy who drowned at Smith Mountain Lake State Park on Thursday.
Marvin Strickland of Gretna was pronounced dead at Bedford Memorial Hospital, said assistant state parks director Warren Wahl.
Marvin was at the park with a group from Sycamore Baptist Church of Gretna, and his aunt and uncle were part of the group, Wahl said. He was in shallow water but waded farther into water that was 6 to 7 feet deep to retrieve a float that had gotten away from another child. The boy didn't know how to swim, Wahl said.
At this point in the investigation, park rangers do not think that anyone, including the lifeguards, saw Marvin go under, said Andrew Davis, assistant director of the Smith Mountain Lake park.
"There were no signs of struggle," he said.
A couple of minutes went by before someone noticed he was missing at about 2:45 p.m. Lifeguards ordered everyone out of the swimming area and began combing the bottom of the lake.
Strickland was found after about 30 minutes. Lifeguards and medics performed CPR, but Strickland was pronounced dead at the hospital.
