A child was pulled from Smith Mountain Lake this afternoon.

Lt. Karl Martin of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said the child was unresponsive when pulled from the water and was sent to a hospital.

Martin said he had no further information at this point. The search for the child was led by the Bedford County Sheriff's Office and staff of Smith Mountain Lake State Park.

A dispatcher at the Bedford County Sheriff's Office referred questions to the state park, where a spokeswoman said officials were still dealing with the situation at 5 p.m. There may be a press conference later tonight, the spokeswoman said.
