U.S. Sen. Jim Webb spoke about the death of his aide, Botetourt County native Fred Hutchins, just a little while ago on the Senate floor, calling him "one of the most honest and friendly people" that he had ever met.
"I had always assumed that Freddie Hutchins would be running for elective office in the near future," said Webb, who extended his sympathies to the family of the 26-year-old.
Hutchins, who ran Webb's Roanoke Valley-based office, was found by a Botetourt County sheriff's deputy just after 7 a.m. on Tuesday, outside his SUV parked on the shoulder of southbound U.S. 220. A handgun was found beneath the body.
As of mid-afternoon today, the medical examiner's office in Roanoke still hadn't made public the cause of death.
And sheriff's deputies continue an investigation.
