Authorities in Roanoke County have arrested a man they say led a high-speed chase that ended when a police officer crashed his cruiser into a light post Thursday.
 
Adam A. Lyon, 24, of Roanoke County turned himself in to police on Monday, Sgt. T. Wyatt said this morning. Investigators had issued warrants against Lyon for eluding police, driving on a suspended license and speeding.
 
Police were able to identify Lyon thanks to a tip from a resident, Wyatt said.
 
The chase began on Bandy Road shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday when Officer D.A. Tribble, in an unmarked police car, tried to pull over a speeding motorcycle.
 
A chase that reached speeds of 90 mph ensued after the motorcycle did not stop. The chase ended on Garden City Boulevard in Roanoke when Tribble crashed his car into a wooden light post, snapping the post in two.
 
Tribble has been with Roanoke County police since 2004.
 
Roanoke County police policy leaves much to the officer's discretion during a pursuit and says factors like severity of the offense, speed of the pursued vehicle and traffic conditions should be considered.
 
The policy says marked patrol cars should take over a chase from unmarked cars whenever possible. Tribble's unmarked car was the only car involved in the chase, though other police cars assisted him after the wreck, Wyatt said.
