A steel truss and timber deck bridge collapsed under the weight of a crossing concrete truck today, sending the driver to the hospital.

The incident occurred at about noon on Route 713 in Giles County, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The truck is owned by Ft. Chiswell Construction, VDOT said. The driver's injuries are believed to not be serious, VDOT spokeswoman Heidi Coy said.

Authorities are investigating.
