Gas leak scare ends along U.S. 220 in Daleville

Crews in Botetourt County responded to a gas leak Thursday afternoon on U.S. 220 in Daleville, but temporary evacuations have ended, officials said.

Sheriff’s Office Maj. Delbert Dudding said an accident happened on a construction site behind Digital Image Printing in the 1600 block of Roanoke Road about 2:30 p.m. It caused the rupture of a 2-inch gas line, Dudding said, and Roanoke Gas was called to shut off the natural gas.

As a precaution, he said, crews cleared some nearby buildings but he was not sure how many people had been affected. By 3:20, Dudding adding, the fire department had checked for lingering gas and those displaced were let back into their buildings.

Dudding said the accident did not appear to pose any threat to Lord Botetourt High School, which is less than a half-mile from the accident.
