Roanoke council stands by budget reductions
Formal vote is scheduled for Monday for the city spending plan that takes effect July 1.
The Roanoke City Council will vote Monday on a 2008-09 budget that is unchanged from a version proposed by city officials.
The council met this morning for a workshop on the budget, discussing items such as proposed cuts for the Fire-EMS Department, cuts for constitutional officers such as the sheriff and commonwealth’s attorney, and the closure of the Addison and Jackson fitness centers. All of those items had been protested during a public hearing last week.
After less than three hours, however, the council concluded without making any changes. The only change came outside the operational budget, with the city allocating $90,000 from its parks and recreation budget to resurface the four tennis courts at Eureka Park.
Perhaps the most notable non-change was in the proposed Fire-EMS department, which was protested last week by 91 firefighters. Council members said they were satisfied with the explanation provided by Roanoke Fire Chief David Hoback, who said his targeted cuts reflected the increasing volume of EMS calls, as well as the city’s plans to build a new fire station on Melrose Avenue sometime in late 2009 or early 2010.
Councilman Brian Wishneff, who had appeared at firefighters’ meetings for support, was not present during the discussion. The six other members of the council were present for the work session.
