Newcomer Wes Nance and incumbent Carolyn Fidler won a five-way race Tuesday for the two open seats on Vinton Town Council.
Incumbent Mayor Brad Grose was unopposed for re-election.
Nance, a deputy commonwealth's attorney in Bedford County, was making his first run for public office. It is not his first foray into town business, however, as he's been member of the Board of Zoning Appeals for a decade and is now its chairman.
Fidler was elected to her second term. Her political experience also includes a longtime position as a legislative aide to former Del. Richard Cranwell. She is Vinton's first female council member.
Posted: 7:53 p.m. Flora re-elected Boones Mill mayor; three-way tie exists for town council
With a 50 percent turnout, Boones Mill voters narrowly re-elected E.V. “Ben” Flora Jr. as mayor and selected challenger Sarah Eames and incumbent Dale Fisher to two of the three town council seats on the ballot.
But a three-way tie for the final council spot means the candidates will draw lots to determine the winner.
Seventy-eight of the 156 registered voters in Boones Mill participated in today’s hotly contested mayoral and town council elections, which featured a slate of challengers for every incumbent.
Flora, the mayor, received 40 votes to 38 for challenger Robert Hogan.
In the town council races, challenger Eames received 40 votes. Fisher, the incumbent, received 39. But then challengers Virginia Carroll and Patricia Hogan and incumbent Richard Miller all received 38 votes.
Elections Board supervisor Bill Cooper said after the results are canvassed, the three candidates will draw lots to determine the winner.
