Man fatally shot in Salem parking lot; suspect detained in Christiansburg
A 48-year-old Roanoke man was fatally shot in a Salem parking lot Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Food Lion on Wildwood Road shortly before 3 p.m. Salem spokeswoman Melinda Payne said it apparently occurred during an argument with another man. The victim, whom police have identified as James Richard Fleshman Jr., was shot "at least 12 times" she said.
Payne said that a suspect was apprehended in Christiansburg. Payne said the man was apprehended between 3:30 and 4 p.m. based on information obtained by witnesses. Payne said he was seen driving a black sport utility vehicle.
Salem police have identified the suspect as Brian Stuart Sheppard , 38, of the 1500 block of Sleepy Hollow Road in Christiansburg. Sheppard has been charged with homicide and the use of a firearm in commission of a felony. He is being held in the Roanoke County-Salem Jail.
