Covington
firefighters are still on the scene of a three-alarm fire that caused between $1
million and $1.5 million in damage to
Covington Motor Co. on
Tuesday.
Crews were called
to the dealership in the 600 block of South Monroe Avenue just after 6:30 p.m.,
said Covington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Wes
Walker.
They found
thick smoke coming from the second floor, Walker said. Firefighters went into the
building to begin fighting the blaze but were evacuated because of the dangerous
conditions.
A short time later, the roof
collapsed onto the second floor, which fell into the first floor, Walker said. No one was in
the building.
It took firefighters two hours to
bring the blaze under
control, Walker
said. Crews from throughout Alleghany County were called to help. Firefighters
were still at the scene this morning to monitor hot
spots.
The showroom, offices and storage
areas suffered the most fire damage, Walker said. The garage was damaged by water
and smoke.
Virginia State Police fire
investigators are on the scene to determine a cause, Walker said. The fire does
not appear to be suspicious, he said.
