Roanoke officer charged with DUI in wreck that totals police cruiser

A Roanoke police officer was charged with driving under the influence Saturday night after wrecking a police cruiser in Pulaski County, Virginia State Police said.

The wreck happened about 10:15 Saturday night on northbound Interstate 81. About six minutes before the crash, state police received a 911 call about someone driving erratically, state police spokesman Sgt. Mike Conroy said.

Officer Andrew Page ran off the road on the right, hitting a guard rail, Conroy said. The wreck totaled the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria he was driving; it was a marked Roanoke police car. Page, who was in plain clothes, cooperated with the investigation, Conroy said. A breathalyzer test showed his blood alcohol content to be 0.16 percent, double the legal limit, according to court documents.

Page received very minor injuries in the crash, according to Conroy, and did not require medical attention.

Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said Page has been suspended and that the department is conductiing an internal investigation of the incident.
