Henry County deputy crashes into building during chase

A Henry County deputy's car crashed into an unoccupied building Tuesday while he was chasing a wanted man, Sheriff Lane Perry said.

The incident began about 6:20 p.m. when Deputy Mike Hooper tried to stop a pickup truck with no tail lights on Blackberry Road, authorities said.

Sheriff's officials gave the following account of what happened:

The pickup turned west onto Fairystone Park Highway. Deputy Glen Stokes joined the chase. His car pulled in front of the fleeing pickup and slowed down, a maneuver called a running roadblock.

The two vehicles "came together" and Stokes' cruiser struck a building in the 5700 block of Fairystone Park Highway.

The pickup continued onto Crestview Drive, where it lost control in a sharp curve and hit an embankment. Hooper arrested the driver, Ronald Amadeus Younger, 21, of Bassett.

Younger was charged with eluding police, driving with a suspended license and improper equipment in connection with the chase, Perry said. Deputies also served Younger with the following outstanding charges: failure to appear in court, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and two counts of violating probation.

Stokes was treated and released from a hospital and is doing OK, Perry said.

Perry said it was too early in the investigation to say exactly how fast the vehicles were going. "It wasn't one that was typically thought of as a high-speed pursuit," he said. "The speeds weren't dangerous."

Henry County sheriff's officials and Virginia State Police are investigating the pursuit.

"At this point, it does appear that they acted appropriately and gave due regard for public safety," Perry said, referring to deputies Stokes and Hooper.

"They were just trying to get someone stopped."

Younger is being held without bond in the Henry County Jail.
