Carbon monoxide victim upgraded from fair to good

One of the five Virginia Tech students hospitalized since Sunday after a carbon monoxide leak at a Blacksburg apartment complex has had her condition upgraded, said University of Virginia Medical Center patient services adviser Betty Boswell.

Kirsten Halik was upgraded from fair to good, Boswell said.

Kristin Julia remained in serious condition, Boswell said.

Information about a third woman, Elizabeth Burgin, is not being released today at the request of her family. Burgin had been listed in good condition Tuesday at Duke University Medical Center.

The remaining victims, Carolyn Dorman and Nichole Howarth, were released from Duke on Tuesday.

In all, 25 people at Collegiate Suites were sickened by Sunday’s leak, which may be linked to a faulty valve on a natural gas-fired water heater in the building where the five hospitalized women were found unconscious.

Blacksburg police are continuing to investigate the incident.
