Earth Day begins with truck hitting students

Updated: 3:13 PM

Earth Day celebrations at Virginia Tech began inauspiciously Thursday as a truck accidentally ran over two students involved in the event.

The students, identified as Richard Shadrach, 18, and Kathy Murrill, 20, were transported to Montgomery Regional Hospital and released after treatment for minor injuries. Shadrach suffered bruises above the right eye and Murrill sustained bruises to the arm, police said.

The incident on the campus Drillfield occurred as members of the Virginia Tech Environmental Coalition were using a university-owned truck to set up for an Earth Day Fair. The driver, Tech senior and group president Aaron Barr, apparently did not notice two people who had participated in a university-sanctioned Earth Day campout and were still lying on the Drillfield grass.

Barr ran over the students, who were in green sleeping bags. Virginia Tech police Chief Debra Duncan said campers were supposed to be sleeping in tents.

"You could call this luck or divine intervention ... but neither student sustained any [serious] injury or trauma," Duncan said.

No charges were filed against Barr or the two students.
