The victim in a Sept. 20 shooting in Salem died Wednesday evening, officials said.
Salem spokesman Mike Stevens said Damian Preston Wright, 35, of Roanoke died at a local hospital. His body was taken to the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy.
Officers were called to the Oak Park Apartments in the 100 block of Otter Avenue just after 9:30 p.m. Sept. 20 after shots were heard in the area, Stevens said. Wright was lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. A search warrant filed Monday in Roanoke Circuit Court said police found the victim with “significant head trauma.”
Jasper Reed Jackson, 23, of Bedford was arrested in Roanoke early Saturday by Roanoke and Salem police in connection with the shooting. He’s charged with aggravated malicious wounding, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, failure to appear, assault and battery of a law enforcement officer and obstruction of justice.
Stevens said Thursday that additional charges could be pending.
The warrant filed Monday says officers searched another man’s home in northwest Roanoke, on Virginia Avenue. He was listed in the warrant as a suspect in the case, but he has not been charged.
Investigators seized items including a box of 9mm ammunition, a gun holster, one gun magazine, two rounds of loose ammunition, one 9mm Beretta handgun and a polo shirt.
Stevens said he could not comment on the warrant but said the investigation is ongoing.
Lt. Joe Mills, the investigator in charge of the case, declined to comment, saying investigators are still interviewing witnesses and following up on new information.
