Roanoke-based Southern Coal Corporation, owned by the Jim Justice family, which also owns the Greenbrier, has called back more miners who were temporarily laid off after certain mines were idled in Southwest Virginia, according to a release from the company.

With this round of callbacks, all the miners of Southern Coal's Virginia operations will have been given an opportunity to return to mining jobs.

"In prior callbacks, surface miners affiliated with Virginia operations were offered the opportunity to return to surface mining in Virginia," the release said. "This latest series of callbacks extends that same opportunity to underground 'deep' miners laid off from Southern Coal's Virginia-based deep mining operation."

The release said a successful contract negotiation with a German steel producer helped bring the miners back to work. Southern Coal operates mines in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
