Roanoke County authorities don’t believe foul play was involved in a Saturday morning fire that left one person dead.
Detectives are working with Roanoke County Fire & Rescue fire marshals to determine what caused a fire in the 4700 block of Twelve O’Clock Knob Road early Saturday, Assistant Police Chief Chuck Mason said in a news release Monday.
Crews found a body in the burned-out home, and Mason said Monday that the medical examiner has determined the victim died of smoke inhalation. He said investigators do not suspect foul play, even as they try to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
The blaze, which was reported by a 911 caller about 1 a.m., burned to the ground the two-story house in remote southwest Roanoke County.
By the time firefighters arrived, flames had engulfed the house and caused the beginning of its collapse.
Mason said the medical examiner’s office is still working to identify the victim and said no further information is available at this time.
