Interactive timeline: Roanoke city projects

Roanoke City Council has begun its search for a new city manager to replace Darlene Burcham, who announced earlier this summer she will retire by March 1, 2010.

Roanoke's government structure requires its part-time mayor and city council members to rely heavily on a full-time city manager, who oversees the city's day-to-day operations and is responsible for pointing the city toward the future.

The success of projects under such a structure is often dependent upon the relationship among the city manager, city council and mayor.

Below is an interactive overview of six major construction projects in Roanoke over the past 50 years -- and the amount of time each took from concept to completion.
