Hillsville Mayor Greg Crowder was arrested and charged with impersonating a law-enforcement officer on Friday.
Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control spokeswoman Carol Mawyer confirmed the charge but few other details.
“I can’t provide a narrative or other details about the incident until the case has been adjudicated,” she said in an email. “It will be heard in the City of Bristol (Va.) General District Court.”
She said the violation occurred March 14 in Bristol, and Crowder was booked by the Bristol Sheriff’s Office. He was released on recognizance, Mawyer said.
Virginia state code says impersonating a law-enforcement officer is a Class 1 misdemeanor and can be punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and/or confinement in jail for up to a year.
The town of Hillsville is the county seat of Carroll County.
