A man drowned Saturday afternoon while swimming in Ivy Lake in Forest, marking the fifth drowning since July in the Lynchburg area.

Johnnie Moore, spokesman for Liberty University, said the drowning victim had been with a group of friends about 2 p.m. Saturday.

"Eyewitnesses saw a man swimming across the lake when he began to struggle," Moore said.

The victim was found about two hours later.

Crews from the Bedford Fire Department, Forest Volunteer Fire Department, the Liberty University Police Department and Campbell County Rescue Squad arrived quickly at the scene.

Authorities have not yet identified the man, but Moore said he is not affiliated with Liberty University, which has owned the lake since 2008, when it was donated by developers.

Moore said this is the first drowning in Ivy Lake since Liberty became the owner.

About a week before Saturday's drowning, 74-year-old John Shoop, of Richmond, was reported missing in Smith Mountain Lake on Aug. 2. Authorities are still searching for Shoop but are treating his disappearance as a drowning.

On July 15, Holly McQuarry, 27, drowned at the Camp Kum-Ba-Yah pool in Lynchburg. She was with two other adults when they called emergency dispatchers shortly before 5 a.m., authorities have said.

Investigators do not believe McQuarry was a victim of foul play.

On July 8, a 69-year-old Delaware woman drowned near Percival's Island while tubing along the James River with her family.

On July 4, 17-year-old Zachary Barbour of Nelson County drowned in a private swimming pool off Lowesville Road in Amherst about 10 p.m. Authorities said Barbour's inability to swim led to his death.
