A Covington woman died in a single-car crash Wednesday night in Alleghany County, officials said.

Troopers believe Iris Lea Rogers, 67, may have had a medical emergency that led to the wreck, said Virginia State Police spokesman Rob Carpentieri.

The crash happened about 9:45 p.m. on Virginia 18 (Potts Creek Road) just north of Virginia 616 (Blue Spring Run Road), Carpentieri said. Rogers was northbound in her 2009 Chevrolet Impala when she apparently ran off the right side of the highway and struck a tree.

Rogers was taken to LewisGale Hospital Alleghany where she was later pronounced dead, Carpentieri said. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
