The routine of a Roanoke breakfast purveyor was broken by the sound of a gunshot early Thursday morning, as a K&W Cafeteria employee was shot while walking into the restaurant.

Roanoke police found the man sitting outside the restaurant, in the 1600 block of Hershberger Road, shortly after 6:45 a.m. Capt. Monti Lee said Carlton Alexander Vaughn, 21, of Roanoke was shot in the groin while walking through the parking lot to the restaurant, where he works.

Vaughn was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was conscious at the time, Lee said. Hospital spokesman Eric Earnhart said Vaughn was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon.

Investigators found a cartridge casing in the middle of the parking lot, which is near Crossroads Mall, but Lee said they have heard conflicting versions of what happened before the shot was fired. It is unclear whether Vaughn was the intended target.

Nancy Benefield, a spokeswoman for K&W, said Vaughn was walking to the restaurant to begin his shift. Lee said Vaughn had taken a Valley Metro bus to the area and was coming from a bus stop.

According to Lee, there was an altercation in the front parking lot where the lone shot was fired.

Benefield said employees already inside the restaurant, which had opened at 6:30 a.m., heard the gunshot and called 911. She said the employees reported seeing a group of people, separate from Vaughn, arguing in the area before the shot was fired.

Several of the employees tended to Vaughn and spoke with police, Benefield said. The restaurant remained open.

Police are still investigating the incident .

“Police are receiving conflicting versions from potential witnesses of what occurred, and who was involved,” Lee said in a news release.

Officers canvassed the parking lot and area surrounding the K&W Thursday morning, and also temporarily cordoned off an access road behind Crossroads Mall as part of the investigation.

Lee said no one was in custody as of Thursday evening. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Roanoke police at 853-5959 or Crime Line at 344-8500.
