A portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke County was closed for several hours Monday while police and rescue personnel investigated an apparent suicide.

The bridge over the Roanoke River near mile marker 114 was blocked by emergency workers who responded about 3:35 p.m. to a report of a man who jumped from the overpass, according to a Roanoke County police news release.

A 48-year-old Roanoke man was found and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after crews arrived, the news release said.

The bridge had reopened by 6:45 p.m., an emergency dispatcher said.
