Danville police say a 2-year-old child is being treated in Roanoke for a gunshot wound to the back.

According to a police news release, officers originally responded to a call of shots fired in the 700 block of Glendale Avenue in Danville about 3 p.m. on Sunday. Upon arrival, they learned the child had been shot and was being taken to Danville Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle.

According to police officials, the 2-year-old was in serious condition and has since been airlifted for treatment at a Roanoke hospital, which was not identified.
