Roanoke’s main library was temporarily closed today because of a power outage.
Sheila Umberger, the city’s director of libraries, said the library, on Jefferson Street downtown, lost power when construction crews working on adjacent Elmwood Park hit a power line.
Fire crews were called to the scene as a precaution, she said, but the broken power line only resulted in sparks and smoke.
A news release issued by the city said the library would reopen at 2:30 p.m., save for the Virginia Room, which will remain closed until further notice.
