A state Department of Corrections operation that called in about 600 ex-offenders on probation to a Salem office Wednesday netted fewer than 20 arrests.
Department spokeswoman Lisa Kinney said the operation involved several law enforcement agencies, including Virginia State Police.
The ex-offenders were called to Salem's district probation and parole office at Lakeside Plaza, where their cars were searched.
Kinney said fewer than 20 were arrested on site, and she did not release information about what charges led to the arrests.
It was the first time the Salem office had conducted this type of operation, Kinney said, but other offices have performed them in the past.
