Wednesday, July 24, 2013
The ongoing construction project at the Interstate 581 interchange with Elm Avenue in Roanoke will alter traffic patterns in the area beginning today, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Today, the north- and southbound sides of I-581, along with the connecting portion of the U.S. 220 expressway, will be reduced to two lanes each.
The southbound ramps will be widened to handle two lanes of traffic.
VDOT said Thursday morning will bring changes to Elm Avenue. All traffic will travel on the southern side of the bridge over I-581, with one through lane and one left turn lane in each direction.
Crews will be working on the north side of the bridge.
VDOT spokeswoman Jamie Smith said the changes will be in effect for at least a few months .
Crews are in the first phase of the project.
Crews will make the changes overnight, according to VDOT.
Motorists can check traffic changes on VDOT’s website, 511Virginia.org.
