Eight people were injured shortly before noon Tuesday in a three-vehicle wreck on Interstate 81 just north of Troutville.
Virginia State Police Trooper R.F. Jarrell said the wreck started when a Chrysler Cirrus sedan shifted from the right lane into the left lane of I-81 north near mile marker 153.
A Dodge SUV in the left lane tried to avoid the Cirrus, but struck the car and then swerved into the right lane, where it hit a tractor-trailer, Jarrell said.
The SUV rolled over at least once, Jarrell said, landing on the driver’s side on the right shoulder. The Cirrus came to a stop in the median.
Jarrell said eight people were in the SUV, and six suffered injuries in the crash. The two uninjured occupants accompanied the others to a local hospital. The two people who were in the Cirrus were also taken to a local hospital. The trooper did not know the severity of the injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Mary Jane Adams, 59, of Big Island, who was driving the Cirrus, was charged with making an improper lane change.
Traffic was restricted in the area until shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to VDOT.
