Firefighters battled a basement fire in Southeast Roanoke on Tuesday afternoon that displaced a family.
Roanoke Fire-EMS crews responded to a house fire in the 1400 block of Morningside St. in Roanoke shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Deputy Fire Chief Ralph Tartaglia said when crews arrived there was light smoke coming from the front of a house. The fire appeared to have started in the basement, Tartaglia said.
Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury said the fire was contained about 3:20 p.m. Bradbury said no one was home at the time of the fire but six children and three adults were displaced as a result. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire, which caused $20,000 in damages, was accidental and electrical in nature, according to Bradbury.
There were no injuries.
