A man already serving 13 years in prison for sex crimes against children drew an additional six-year sentence at a plea hearing Monday in Roanoke Circuit Court.
William Dennis Andrews, 42, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and two counts of forcible sodomy.
Those follow his February guilty pleas to charges of rape and sodomy against two female victims who were 12 and 13 at the time. All of the offenses stem from attacks between January 2001 and June 2003 in a northwest Roanoke neighborhood, prosecutors have said.
Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Betty Jo Anthony said Andrews was in his late 20s at the time of the crimes and knew the victims as friends of a much younger relative. She said Andrews led those victims and other children through amateur martial arts training sessions that, for the female members of the group, ultimately involved sexual situations.
Anthony said he used threats to ensure their silence, and she described how Andrews intimidated one victim, even within view of her home: “He would show her, point out her father across the street, and tell her he’d kill him if she told anyone.
“She was 10, so she believed that,” Anthony said Monday.
Andrews’ sentencing this week concludes the active cases against him that investigators are aware of and pursued, Anthony said. But she added that there were about 10 other neighborhood children who told police Andrews had abused them, but she said they did not want to proceed with charges.
In some cases, Anthony said, “they hadn’t told their parents, ever, and they didn’t want to start now. Some of them are frightened of him yet.”
“He pretty much got a whole neighborhood of kids in this web,” she said.
An additional count of rape and one count of forcible sodomy were dismissed against Andrews as part of his plea agreement.
He also received 34 years in suspended time.
