Strong currents this week damaged a boat barrier in the Roanoke River upstream from Appalachian Power Co.’s Niagara hydroelectric dam in Roanoke County, officials said.
The floating barrier is typically strung across the river above the small power plant, but was damaged following this week’s heavy rains, Appalachian spokesman Todd Burns said in a news release Thursday.
Burns said utility officials hope to have the barrier repaired “as expediently as is safely possible with the continued high water conditions.”
“In the meantime, boaters and other recreationalists are urged to use extreme caution and pay attention to signs upstream of the dam,” Burns said.
