The Henry County Sheriff's Office has charged a Bassett man in the death of his cousin early this morning.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of Blackwell Road in Bassett at 2:26 a.m. this morning and found a man dead.
Sonny James Turner, 44, of Martinsville had been shot, the release said. Investigators determined he had been in an altercation with Thomas Dewayne Turner, 36, of Bassett.
According to the release, Thomas Turner shot Sonny Turner during the altercation. The sheriff's office said the men were cousins.
Investigators charged Thomas Turner with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond in the Henry County jail.
Sonny Turner's body will be turned over to the medical examiner for an autopsy.
The investigation into the homicide is ongoing, the release said, and anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 276-638-8751.
