A man died Wednesday morning after the truck he was driving hit a tree and a utility pole on Virginia 40 in Franklin County.
Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said Lonnie Madison Crowe, 65, of Ferrum was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The wreck occurred near Westover Road, about halfway between Ferrum and Rocky Mount, according to Carpentieri. He said Crowe was driving the white 1992 straight truck east on Virginia 40 about 6:38 a.m. when he ran off the right side of the road, striking a tree and a utility pole before the truck overturned.
The crash closed lanes of Virginia 40 for about four hours, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
