A diesel fuel spill at a Botetourt County gas station was cleaned up overnight after a crash punctured the rear compartment of a tanker Thursday night.
Jason Ferguson, division chief of Botetourt County’s department of emergency services, said crews used vacuums to clean up the spill, which authorities estimated at about 1,000 gallons last night.
Two trucks collided at about 11:25 p.m. Thursday night, just off Interstate 81 exit 150 at a Troutville gas station, and a gasoline tanker’s rear compartment began leaking. Ferguson credited the tanker driver with quick thinking after he immediately began pumping the truck’s load into the station’s tanks as planned, minimizing the amount spilled.
The crews finished the clean-up effort by morning, Ferguson said, but left prevantive devices near drainage areas to soak up any fuel picked up by flowing waters.
