A teenager has been charged with 27 counts of property damage after an incident early Sunday morning in Roanoke County.
Joey Dee Shumate, 19, of Roanoke was arrested shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the 7300 block of South Barrens Road, according to county spokeswoman Teresa Hamilton Hall .
Hall said officers responded to a report of a burglary at Peters Creek Apartments , after someone attempted to enter an occupied residence. They used a police dog to detain Shumate, who was later linked to a string of damaged vehicles nearby, she said.
Roanoke County police Lt. Chuck Mason said Monday that investigators were still trying to determine exactly how many vehicles were damaged.
Shumate is additionally charged with three felonies - attempted breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools and wearing a mask in public - as well as underage possession of alcohol and being drunk in public.
He is being held without bond at the Roanoke County-Salem Jail.
