A fire destroyed a Bedford County home and shut down Virginia 43 for several hours Monday afternoon.
At least two occupants were home when the fire started, and one was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Seth Mowles, a captain with the Bedford County Department of Fire and Rescue.
The home was on Virginia 43, about 7 miles south of Bedford. The call for the fire came in a bout noon, and units from Bedford, Moneta, Forest, Huddleston, Stewartsville and Saunders responded.
Wind and the contents of the home made it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Smoke blew across Virginia 43, hindering visibility, and water had to be tanked in to fight the fire.
