A passenger died when a car ran off Virginia 42 in Giles County on Saturday and struck a tree.

Virginia State Police Trooper J.C. Reynolds said a 1990 Mazda 626 sedan ran off Virginia 42 about 3 miles north of U.S. 460, near Newport, shortly after 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

William Baublitz, 67, who was riding in the front passenger seat, died in the crash, Reynolds said. He was wearing a shoulder restraint .

The driver, Anthony L. Garrett, Jr., 40, of Buchanan, suffered life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to a state police news release issued Sunday. Garrett was not wearing a seat belt, the release said.

State police said the investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending.
