Fire damages Giles County motel
Monday, March 11, 2013
A late-night fire destroyed a motel in Giles County on Saturday.
No one was seriously injured in the blaze that broke out about 11 p.m. at the Rendezvous Motel on U.S. 460, according to Richard Stump, chief of the Pearisburg Volunteer Fire Department.
Two firefighters suffering from smoke inhalation and dehydration were taken to a hospital. After being released, they returned to the fire scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Stump did not have an estimate for the damage to the single-story motel building, which is on U.S. 460 Business, not far from the Celanese plant in Narrows.
An unknown number of people inside the building were able to get out shortly after the fire started.
"They just kind of scattered," Stump said. "We knocked on the doors and they left."
About 25 firefighters from departments in Pearisburg, Pembroke and Narrows battled the fire through the night.
It took nearly eight hours to bring the blaze under control, mainly because of the building's construction, which involved four layers of roofing material, Stump said.
Fire crews remained at the scene until about noon Sunday.
