Suspect arrested after eluding Roanoke police

Roanoke police arrested a person Thursday night who led officers on a chase, eventually crashing into a fire hydrant and running on foot through northwest Roanoke.

Lt. D.E. Hartman said police spotted a drug transaction take place in the northwest quadrant of the city Thursday night. Officers pursued a maroon SUV, which did not stop for police.

According to Hartman, a person involved in the drug transaction crashed the car into a fire hydrant near the intersection of Peters Creek Road and Shenandoah Avenue about 10:05 p.m., then attempted to flee on foot.

Officers arrested the suspect on charges of eluding police and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

No further information was available because the investigation is ongoing.
